Compete Learn Honor Scholarship

The Parkway Alumni Association is pleased to announce that a new scholarship will be available to Parkway South High tennis team members, starting with the girls’ 2025 season. The “Compete-Learn-Honor” Scholarship” was set up to provide scholarships to students chosen from Parkway South High School, who are current members of the South High Tennis team, and are Seniors pursuing post-secondary education through community college, college, university, trade school, or other program deemed appropriate by the selection committee.

A $1,000 award will be given to up to 2 boys and 2 girls each year, 2 from JV and 2 from Varsity. To be eligible, students must:

  • Be accepted into an accredited institution to receive post-secondary education;
  • Be well-rounded academically, maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA; and
  • Exemplify the principles of Compete-Learn-Honor, namely:

1) giving 100% effort without excuses in practices and matches;

2) demonstrating openness, curiosity, and humility in their love of the game and thirst for ongoing learning about the game of tennis, and

3) serving as a role model for others in acting with sportspersonship and high character toward self and others—including opponents—and bringing credit to South High and the game of tennis.

Applicants will be asked to provide the names of 2 tennis team members who will submit recommendations on the applicant’s behalf. Applicants will also submit a self-recommendation that describes why the applicant is deserving of the Compete-Learn-Honor Tennis Scholarship.

The Compete-Learn-Honor Scholarship Awards are being funded by a donation from Coach Pete Scales and Martha Roper Scales. Coach Pete has been a tennis coach at South High since 2008, and Martha taught health education at South High from 1988-2011.

The Compete-Learn-Honor Scholarship Awards will be decided on by a selection committee of PAA representative(s), the South High Activities/Athletic Director, and at least 1 other Parkway South staff person. Current South High tennis team coaches are not eligible to serve on the selection committee, and their relatives are not eligible to be awarded the scholarship.

The application deadlines for Seniors on the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 South High Tennis Teams are as follows: November 15, 2025, for the Women's Teams; and April 15, 2026, for the Men's Teams.

Contact Sandy Riutcel, Executive Director, Parkway Alumni Association, ParkwayAlumni@parkwayschools.net, 314-415-8074, to get the application form, for more information or to donate to the Compete-Learn-Honor Scholarship Fund.
